An Asian wedding is a series of events, not one party

For many families, the wedding is a week or more of celebrations rather than a single day. There might be a dholki or jaggo, a mehndi, a sangeet, the religious ceremony, a reception and sometimes a walima or a party at home afterwards. Every family does it differently, and the order, names and customs change with region, faith and family tradition: Punjabi Sikh, Hindu, Gujarati, Pakistani, Bangladeshi and Bengali weddings can look very different from one another.

That is why we ask about every event before we match you. A DJ who is perfect for a big reception may not be the right person for a relaxed henna night in a family living room, and the reverse is true too.

How the events differ

Each part of the wedding asks something different of a DJ.

  • The nights before. Mehndi, maiyan, jaggo, dholki, gaye holud or sangeet nights are usually informal and family-led. Expect singing, family dances and rehearsed performances, often at home or in a smaller hall. Our page on the mehndi and sangeet DJ covers these nights in detail.
  • The ceremony. Religious ceremonies such as the Anand Karaj, a Hindu ceremony led by a priest or a nikah are often held without a DJ. Music, where there is any, is usually decided by the family, the priest or the venue.
  • The procession. Many families want a dhol player to lead the baraat or welcome the bride or groom. See dhol players for your baraat and entrances for timing, volume and venue points.
  • The reception. The biggest setup of the wedding: grand entrances, speeches, a cake cutting, a first dance and a long dance floor for every generation.

The music: wider than one genre

A good Asian wedding DJ needs a deep library and the judgement to use it. Depending on your family, that might mean:

  • classic and current Bhangra and Punjabi releases, covered on our Punjabi and Bhangra DJ page
  • Bollywood from older film songs to this year’s releases, covered on our Bollywood DJ page
  • garba and raas for Gujarati families, qawwali or ghazals for a quieter part of the evening, or Bengali songs for a gaye holud
  • UK chart, R&B, hip hop and party classics for friends and younger guests

For Hindu, Gujarati and mixed families planning several nights, our Indian wedding DJ page goes into how one DJ can carry the music across the whole wedding.

The Birmingham angle

Birmingham and the wider West Midlands have one of the largest South Asian communities in the UK, and the city has been central to British Bhangra since its early days. That means a strong choice of specialist DJs, and guests who know their music well.

It also shapes the practical side. Many Birmingham Asian receptions take place in large banqueting suites or function halls with hundreds of guests, from grandparents to young children. A DJ for that room needs:

  • a sound system that fills a large space evenly without drowning out conversation at the back
  • lighting suited to a big room and a big dance floor
  • confident announcements for entrances and speeches, in the languages and style your family wants
  • a clear plan with the venue’s own team, who often run a tight schedule for food, speeches and finish time

Venues set their own rules on setup times, sound limiters and curfews, so always check with yours. Our guide to what a DJ needs from your venue lists the questions to ask, and the Birmingham wedding venues hub has general notes on DJs at local venues.

One DJ or several?

Some families book one DJ for every event, which keeps the music consistent and means one person learns your family, your running order and your guests. Others prefer a different DJ for a home mehndi and the main reception, especially when the events are in different towns or on the same day.

Either can work. Tell us what you are planning and we will match you with a DJ who can cover it. If one DJ cannot do everything, we will say so rather than stretch the match.

What to tell us

The matching form asks for:

  • every event, with its date, venue and rough guest numbers
  • the music you want at each, including any regional or language preferences
  • whether you want dhol, lighting, a large sound system or a particular look for the setup
  • any family performances or entrances you are planning

If cost is on your mind, the honest answer is that Asian wedding DJ quotes vary a lot with the number of events, the hours, the setup, lighting and dhol. The DJ we match you with quotes you directly for your plans.

How we match you

Add each of your wedding events to the form with its date, venue and the music you want. We read it properly and pass it to the one Birmingham DJ who specialises in weddings like yours. That DJ contacts you directly, and you book and pay them as an independent business. We never send your details to a list.

How matching works

  1. 1 · Tell us about your event

The occasion, your music, the feel you want and what matters most: lighting, sound, the look of the setup, a DJ who is confident on the microphone.

  2. 2 · We pick one DJ

We read your answers and choose the local DJ who fits best. Your enquiry goes to that DJ only, never a list.

  3. 3 · They get in touch

Your DJ contacts you directly with availability and a quote, usually within 24 hours. You deal with them, and you decide whether to book.

Questions people ask

Can one DJ cover all our wedding events?

Often, yes. Many Asian wedding DJs cover the mehndi, sangeet and reception, and some can also arrange dhol players. Add every date in the form and we'll match you with a DJ who can do them all, or tell you honestly if one DJ can't.

Do you need a DJ for an Anand Karaj or other religious ceremony?

Usually not. A Sikh Anand Karaj takes place in the gurdwara with hymns sung around the Guru Granth Sahib, and many gurdwaras ask for no music, dhol or dancing on their premises. Most families book the DJ for the events around the ceremony, such as the jaggo, mehndi and reception.

How much does an Asian wedding DJ cost?

Asian wedding DJ quotes vary a lot with the number of events, the hours at each, the setup, lighting and whether you want dhol. The DJ we match you with quotes you directly, so you can compare it against exactly what you need.

Can the DJ provide dhol players?

Some DJs work with regular dhol players and can book them with the music. Tick dhol players in the extras and we'll take that into account. Our dhol players page covers the practical side.

Do you only cover Birmingham?

Birmingham and nearby, including Solihull, Sutton Coldfield and the surrounding towns. Many specialist DJs also travel further for larger weddings.
