What a good wedding DJ does
A wedding DJ does far more than play songs in order. The best ones read the room, so the dance floor fills early and stays full. They keep to your timings and work with the venue coordinator. They make the key moments land: your first dance, the cake, the last song.
If you want music before the evening starts, many DJs also cover the ceremony and drinks reception with a second, smaller setup. Our sample wedding reception timings show where the DJ fits into the day.
They also handle the practical side, which couples rarely see:
- arriving early to load in and set up, often while guests are still at the wedding breakfast
- working within the venue’s rules on power, setup position, volume and finish time
- having backup equipment, and public liability insurance where the venue asks for it
- dealing with requests politely, without losing the music you asked for
Every venue is different, and some have firm rules on power, volume and finish times. Our guide to what a DJ needs from your venue covers the details, and we have notes on DJs at Birmingham wedding venues including Hampton Manor, Birmingham Botanical Gardens and Aston Hall.
Choosing the right wedding DJ in Birmingham
Birmingham has a huge range of DJs, from people who mostly play clubs to specialists who only do weddings. Rather than comparing a dozen websites, it is worth deciding what matters most to you first. Then talk to someone who fits.
Your music. Do you want chart hits, Motown and soul, 80s and 90s classics, house, garage, indie, Bhangra or a mix? A DJ who loves your music will play it better than one who simply owns it. For mehndi, sangeet and Asian receptions we match you with an Asian wedding DJ who specialises in it. Our wedding playlist and first dance guide helps you build the list.
The feel of the night. Some couples want elegant background music that builds slowly. Others want a full-on party from the first dance. The form asks you to pick, because it changes which DJ suits you.
The setup. Lighting, sound and the look of the DJ booth vary a lot between DJs. If your photos matter, ask what the setup looks like in a room like yours.
The microphone. A wedding DJ often makes the evening announcements. Some are natural and confident on the mic; some prefer to say very little. Both are fine, as long as it matches what you want.
Questions to ask any wedding DJ
The short list is below. Our full guide to questions to ask a wedding DJ explains what a good answer looks like.
- Have you played at our venue, or one like it?
- What happens if your equipment fails, or you are ill on the day?
- How do we choose must-plays and do-not-plays, and how do you handle requests?
- What time do you arrive, and how long do you need to set up?
- What is included in the price: hours, lighting, ceremony music, travel?
- Do you have public liability insurance and PAT-tested equipment?
- What deposit do you take, and what are your cancellation terms?
How we match you
You answer a few questions: the date, your venue, guest numbers, your music, the vibe, and how much lighting, sound, the look of the setup and announcements matter. Then we choose the one local DJ who fits best and pass your enquiry to them. You hear from that DJ directly. If they can’t do your date, we ask you before suggesting anyone else.
How matching works
- 1 · Tell us about your event
The occasion, your music, the feel you want and what matters most: lighting, sound, the look of the setup, a DJ who is confident on the microphone.
- 2 · We pick one DJ
We read your answers and choose the local DJ who fits best. Your enquiry goes to that DJ only, never a list.
- 3 · They get in touch
Your DJ contacts you directly with availability and a quote, usually within 24 hours. You deal with them, and you decide whether to book.

Questions people ask
How much does a wedding DJ cost in Birmingham?
The wedding DJs in our Birmingham pool start from £395 for shorter bookings. Published UK guides put a professional wedding DJ at roughly £500 to £2,000 or more. Shorter, weekday or DJ-only bookings sit at the lower end; full-day cover with lighting and extras at the higher end. Our price guide goes through what affects it.
How far ahead should we book a wedding DJ?
Popular Saturdays in the summer go first, so many couples book their DJ soon after the venue. If your date is close, it is still worth asking; we only pass your enquiry to a DJ who could realistically do it.
Can the DJ play our ceremony and drinks reception too?
Many wedding DJs can, using a separate, smaller sound setup during the day. Tick ceremony and drinks music in the form and we'll only match you with a DJ who offers it. More on ceremony and drinks reception music.
Will the DJ make announcements?
If you want them to. Some couples want the DJ to introduce the first dance, the cutting of the cake and the last song; others want none at all. The form asks how important confident, professional announcements are to you.
Our venue has a sound limiter. Is that a problem?
Not for an experienced wedding DJ. Some venues, especially historic ones, set a maximum volume or ask for a particular setup. Tell us your venue and we'll factor it into the match.
