What a mobile disco is

A mobile disco is a DJ who comes to you. They bring the speakers, the decks, the music, the lighting and the cables, set it all up in your room, play for the agreed hours and take it all away again. You’ll see the terms mobile disco and mobile DJ used for the same service. Mobile disco is the older phrase and many people still search for it; mobile DJ is what most DJs call themselves now.

The difference from a club DJ is flexibility. A mobile DJ adapts to the room, the crowd and the occasion, whether that’s a children’s party at 3pm or a 50th that runs until midnight. Our party DJ hire hub lists every kind of celebration we match DJs for.

Where a mobile disco works

Community halls and village halls. Popular for birthdays and family parties because they’re affordable and you can bring your own food. Check the hall’s finish time, whether it has a sound limiter, and how long you have to set up and clear the room.

Function rooms. Rooms at pubs, sports and social clubs and hotels often come with a bar and staff. Some already have a house sound system; ask the venue whether an outside DJ can use their own.

Marquees and gardens. A marquee party needs a reliable power supply, a level floor for the DJ and protection from rain for the equipment. If the power comes from a generator, tell the DJ in advance.

Home parties. A big living room, a kitchen extension or a garden can work for a smaller party. Clear a space, think about where people will dance, and warn the neighbours about the music and the finish time.

Power and space

Most mobile DJs need:

  • one or two standard sockets close to where they’ll set up, ideally not shared with an urn or a kitchen
  • a clear area along one wall or in a corner, with room for speakers and lighting stands
  • step-free access, or a lift, for heavy cases
  • somewhere close to unload and park

It’s worth measuring the space and checking where the sockets are before the DJ arrives. Our guide to what a DJ needs from your venue goes through this in more detail.

Kids’ parties and family events

A mobile disco is a common choice for children’s birthdays, school discos and family fun days. For younger children, a DJ might run party games like musical statues, a limbo or a dance-off, with songs they know from films and the radio. For teenagers, see our 18th and 21st birthday page or, for an end-of-year school event, our school prom DJ page.

For family events with all ages, a DJ who can play something for the children early on, then move to music for the adults later, is often the best fit. Tell us the age range in the form.

Lighting

Lighting is a big part of what makes a hall feel like a party. Depending on the DJ and the budget, a mobile disco might include:

  • lights on the DJ booth or on stands, often moving in time to the music
  • uplighting to colour the walls of a plain room
  • a haze or smoke effect, though many venues restrict these because they can set off fire alarms, so always ask the venue first
  • an LED dance floor as an extra, in larger rooms

Rate how important lighting and the look of the setup are in the form, so we match you with a DJ whose setup suits the room. For what changes a quote, see our DJ hire prices page.

How we match you

Tell us where the party is, how big the room is and who’s coming. We’ll find the one mobile DJ in our Birmingham pool whose setup and style fit the space, and send them your enquiry. They’ll be in touch directly with a quote.

How matching works

  1. 1 · Tell us about your event

The occasion, your music, the feel you want and what matters most: lighting, sound, the look of the setup, a DJ who is confident on the microphone.

  2. 2 · We pick one DJ

We read your answers and choose the local DJ who fits best. Your enquiry goes to that DJ only, never a list.

  3. 3 · They get in touch

Your DJ contacts you directly with availability and a quote, usually within 24 hours. You deal with them, and you decide whether to book.

Questions people ask

What is a mobile disco?

A mobile disco is a DJ who brings their own sound system, lighting and music to your venue, rather than working at a club or bar. The term mobile DJ means the same thing.

Can a mobile disco set up in a house?

Often, yes. Some DJs have compact setups for living rooms and conservatories. You'll need enough floor space, safe access to power and neighbours who know what's happening.

Do mobile DJs do children's parties?

Some do, with party games, competitions and age-appropriate music. Say it's a children's party in the form, with the ages, and we'll match you with a DJ who is happy to run one.

How much space does a mobile disco need?

It depends on the setup. A small rig might need a couple of metres along one wall; a larger one with lighting stands needs more. Ask your DJ for their exact footprint and tell them the room size.
