School prom DJ Birmingham
School prom DJ Birmingham
A prom is a big night for students and a careful one for schools. Tell us about the event, the music and what the school needs, and we'll match you with one Birmingham DJ who fits.
Who organises the prom
Proms are organised in different ways. Sometimes the school runs it, sometimes a committee of students and parents, and sometimes a group of parents books a venue themselves. Whoever is organising, the DJ will need a single contact for the details, and that person should know the school’s expectations.
Tell us in the form who is organising and whether the school has its own requirements for outside suppliers. We pass that to the DJ we match you with.
Music for prom
A prom crowd usually wants current music: chart, dance, hip-hop, R&B, Afrobeats and the songs that are popular in that year group. The 18th and 21st birthday page has more on music for young crowds.
The difference at a prom is that it’s a school event. Most schools will want:
- Clean edits or radio edits of songs with explicit lyrics
- A do-not-play list agreed by staff or the committee
- Volume kept sensible during arrivals, photos and any meal
Ask the DJ to confirm in writing that they’ll play clean versions only. It helps everyone on the night.
Song requests from students
Students will have strong views about the music. Collecting requests before the night is the easiest way to make sure everyone’s favourites are included and anything unsuitable is caught early. Some committees use a simple online form or a shared playlist, checked by a member of staff, then send the final list to the DJ.
On the night, agree with the DJ whether they can take requests from the floor, and whether they should check anything they’re unsure about with a named member of staff.
Safeguarding and school requirements
Schools have their own safeguarding policies, and some apply them to anyone working at a school event, even off site. Things schools often ask a DJ for include:
- a current DBS check
- public liability insurance
- PAT test certificates for electrical equipment
- a risk assessment for the setup
Requirements vary by school, so check with the school first, then ask the DJ directly whether they can provide each one. Please don’t assume a DJ holds a DBS check; ask to see it.
Arrival, setup and finish
Most proms follow a familiar shape: arrivals and photos, a meal or buffet, then dancing until the finish time. Before the night, share with your DJ:
- the time the room is available for setup, ideally before guests arrive
- when students arrive, and whether there’s a red carpet or photo moment that needs music
- the meal time, and when the dance floor opens
- the finish time, so the last songs are planned and parents know when to collect
If the prom is at a hotel or function room, ask the venue about power, access and any sound limiter. Our guide to what a DJ needs from your venue covers the details. For a school hall or end-of-year disco for younger pupils, our mobile disco page may be more useful.
Questions to ask the DJ before booking
Before anyone pays a deposit, it helps to get clear answers to a few questions, ideally by email so the school has a record:
- Will you play clean or radio edits only, and how do you handle a request you’re unsure about?
- Do you hold a current DBS check, and can we see it?
- Can you send your public liability insurance and PAT test certificates?
- What time do you need to arrive, and how long does setup take?
- What happens if you’re ill on the day?
Budgets
Prom budgets are often set by ticket sales, so it helps to know your limit early. Choose a budget band in the form and we’ll only match you with a DJ whose prices fit. See our DJ hire prices page for what changes a quote, or the party DJ hire hub for other events.
How we match you
Give us the date, the venue, the year group and the school’s requirements. We pass the details to the one Birmingham DJ we think suits your prom, and they contact the organiser directly. You can then ask them about clean edits, DBS and insurance before anything is booked.

How matching works
- 1 · Tell us about your event
The occasion, your music, the feel you want and what matters most: lighting, sound, the look of the setup, a DJ who is confident on the microphone.
- 2 · We pick one DJ
We read your answers and choose the local DJ who fits best. Your enquiry goes to that DJ only, never a list.
- 3 · They get in touch
Your DJ contacts you directly with availability and a quote, usually within 24 hours. You deal with them, and you decide whether to book.
Questions people ask
Will a prom DJ play clean versions of songs?
Most DJs can play radio edits or clean versions on request. Ask for clean edits in writing when you book, so there is no doubt on the night.
Do prom DJs need a DBS check?
Many schools ask for one when an outside supplier works with students. Ask the DJ directly whether they hold a current DBS check and whether they can show it, and check your school's own policy.
How can students request songs for prom?
A common approach is for the prom committee to collect requests in advance, check them and send one list to the DJ. Some DJs also take requests on the night within the rules the school sets.
When should we book a prom DJ?
Proms tend to fall in late June and July, so dates in that window can go early. Many committees start looking several months ahead.
