Wedding DJ at Birmingham Botanical Gardens
Wedding DJ at Birmingham Botanical Gardens
A historic Edgbaston garden with indoor event suites for the ceremony, meal and party. Here is what that means when you are choosing a DJ.
About the venue
Birmingham Botanical Gardens is on Westbourne Road in Edgbaston. The gardens date from 1829 and describe themselves as one of the UK’s most significant historic botanic gardens still intact. There are four Victorian glasshouses, plus outdoor gardens including a Japanese Garden and an Alpine Garden.
Weddings take place in the banqueting suites rather than in the glasshouses or open gardens. The venue’s wedding pages list three suites, all licensed for civil ceremonies:
- A large, light suite for up to 500 guests, suited to big weddings
- The Terrace Suite for up to 180 guests, home to the gardens’ cacti collection
- The Loudon Suite (the Cedar Room) for up to 60 guests
The external terraces are used for drinks receptions in the warmer months.
What this means for your DJ
Because the suites are banqueting rooms rather than period interiors, a DJ will usually find the practical side straightforward. A few points are specific to this venue, all from its published FAQs:
- Bar times shape the night. The bar usually closes at 11pm. A late licence to 1am is available at extra cost, and the bar closes at least 30 minutes before the event ends. Agree your music finish time with the venue before you book a DJ, so you are quoted for the right hours.
- Outside suppliers. You can bring your own AV supplier or equipment, subject to PAT testing where appropriate and proof of public liability insurance. Your DJ should have both ready to send.
- No naked flames, fireworks or lanterns. Naked flames are banned in the suites, and fireworks and Chinese lanterns are not permitted. That rules out some effects, so check with the venue before your DJ brings anything beyond standard lighting.
- Exclusive use is of the suites, not the gardens. The banqueting suites can be hired exclusively, but the gardens stay open to the public in the day. That can affect how loud drinks music on the terrace should be. Ask the team.
The FAQs do not mention a sound limiter or loading arrangements. Ask the venue about both, and pass the answers on to your DJ. Our guide to what a DJ needs from your venue lists the other questions worth asking.
Choosing the right suite size for the dance floor
The three suites are very different sizes, and that changes the DJ setup you need. A 500-guest wedding needs a sound system that fills a large room evenly, and probably more lighting to make the space feel full. A Loudon Suite wedding for 60 needs something compact that doesn’t dominate the room. Tell any DJ which suite you have booked and your guest numbers, so they bring the right kit rather than their standard setup.
Asian weddings at the Gardens
The FAQs say Indian and Asian catering must go through the venue’s exclusive Asian Events Partners, whose quotes cover suite hire, catering, décor and event management. Hindu fire ceremonies can be arranged through those partners. If you are planning a multi-day celebration, ask the partner how entertainment fits into their package before you book a DJ separately. Our Asian wedding DJ page covers the music for each event.
Ceremony and drinks
With the ceremony in one of the suites and drinks often on the terrace, a DJ who offers a second, smaller setup can play you down the aisle and then move to the drinks reception. See ceremony and drinks reception music for how that usually works.
