Wedding DJ at New Hall Hotel
Wedding DJ at New Hall Hotel & Spa
New Hall is a moated manor house in Sutton Coldfield, with ceremonies in an oak-panelled chamber or a walled garden. Here is what that means for your music.
About New Hall
New Hall Hotel & Spa is on Walmley Road in Sutton Coldfield, part of the Hand Picked Hotels group. The house dates from the 13th century, when it was built as a hunting lodge for the Earl of Warwick, and the hotel describes it as England’s oldest listed and inhabited moated house. It has 60 bedrooms, a spa, and 26 acres of grounds, with a drawbridge over a lily-filled moat.
The hotel lists these capacities for weddings:
- ceremony: 75 guests
- wedding meal: 150 guests
- evening party: 200 guests
Ceremony spaces
The hotel’s ceremony page lists three options:
- The Great Chamber, for up to 75, with oak-panelled walls, a painted ceiling and leaded windows. The hotel’s capacity chart says the room was originally built for King Henry VIII and gives a ceiling height of about six metres.
- The Walled Garden, outdoors, for up to 200 at a blessing or non-religious ceremony, or 75 at a civil ceremony.
- The Sir Alfred Owen room, for intimate ceremonies of up to 40.
For a DJ, the Great Chamber and the Walled Garden need quite different setups. The capacity chart puts the Great Chamber at roughly 11 by 5 metres, so a small, discreet speaker setup is usually enough. The Walled Garden needs speakers placed near the guests and either nearby power or battery equipment. Ask the hotel which is your wet-weather plan, so your DJ is ready for both. Our page on ceremony and drinks reception music explains how this works alongside the evening setup.
Playing in a medieval house
Very old buildings bring practical questions that a modern hotel doesn’t. The hotel doesn’t publish rules on music or equipment, so ask:
- Which room is the evening party in? The wedding pages give an evening capacity of 200 but don’t say where the dancing happens. Find out, and where the DJ sets up within it.
- How does equipment get in? In historic houses, routes can involve steps, narrow corridors or long carries. Ask where a supplier can unload and how far it is to the room.
- Are there limits on volume, effects or fixings? Listed buildings often restrict haze, smoke and anything attached to walls. Ask before your DJ plans the lighting.
- Who else is staying? With 60 bedrooms and a spa, other hotel guests may be in residence unless you have exclusive use. Ask whether that affects volume or the finish time.
Our guide to what a DJ needs from your venue has a fuller checklist.
The gardens after dark
The hotel suggests its gardens and grounds for evening moments such as a sparkler send-off. If you want music for that, tell your DJ in advance. It may mean a short break in the dance floor, or a portable speaker outside. Plan it into the evening running order, which our wedding reception timings guide can help with.
Choosing the DJ
A venue like this suits a DJ who is comfortable working with an events team, keeps the setup tidy in a period room, and can judge volume in a house with other guests nearby. Ask any DJ you consider how they would set up in the room you have booked, and whether they have worked in historic buildings before.

Questions people ask
Can we bring our own DJ to New Hall?
The hotel's wedding pages don't publish a supplier or DJ policy. Ask the wedding team at your show round whether outside DJs are welcome and what insurance and certificates they need.
How many guests can New Hall take for a wedding?
The hotel lists 75 for a ceremony, 150 for the wedding meal and 200 for the evening party. The Walled Garden takes up to 200 for a blessing or non-religious ceremony and 75 for a civil ceremony.
What time does the music finish at New Hall?
The wedding pages don't give a finish time. Ask the hotel, and pass the answer on to your DJ so they quote for the right hours.
Can we get married outdoors at New Hall?
Yes. The hotel lists the Walled Garden for outdoor ceremonies, and it is the only outdoor ceremony space on its ceremony page.
