Wedding DJ at The Grand Hotel
Wedding DJ at The Grand Hotel Birmingham
A restored Victorian hotel in the city centre, with a Louis XIV-style ballroom and smaller rooms upstairs. Here is what to sort out with the hotel and your DJ before the day.
About The Grand Hotel
The Grand Hotel was opened in 1879 by Isaac Horton, to designs by the architect Thomson Plevins. After almost 20 years closed, it reopened following a restoration the hotel puts at £50 million. The hotel is in Birmingham city centre, and gives its address as 1 Church Street.
For weddings, the hotel offers:
- The Grand Ballroom, a Louis XIV-style room with double-height windows, a semi-private balcony and original art deco chandeliers. The hotel lists it at 310 square metres, for up to 300 guests theatre-style or for receptions, next to the Crush bar and the Horton reception room.
- Private rooms on the first floor for smaller receptions and parties. The hotel’s event page lists its first-floor multi-function rooms at up to 112 guests for receptions.
The wedding page also points couples towards Birmingham Cathedral for the ceremony.
Playing in a listed ballroom
The Grand Ballroom is the room most couples picture, and it suits a proper dance floor. But a tall, ornate room with a listed interior brings a few things to discuss before the day:
- Sound in a high room. Double-height ceilings and hard surfaces can make sound echo. A DJ with well-placed speakers and the experience to set levels for the room will sound clearer than one who simply turns up the volume.
- Fixings and effects. It is common for listed interiors to have rules about what can be attached, where cables run and whether haze or smoke is allowed. The hotel doesn’t publish its rules, so ask the weddings team.
- Lighting the room. Uplighters and dance-floor lighting can show off the plasterwork and chandeliers. Ask the hotel whether any lighting is already in place, so your DJ only brings what’s missing.
- The balcony. If you plan to use it for speeches or an entrance, tell your DJ so they can position a microphone or speaker for it.
City-centre load-in
The practical side of a city-centre hotel is often harder than the music. Before you confirm a DJ, find out from the hotel:
- Where suppliers unload, and whether a loading bay or service entrance is available
- Where the DJ can park for the night, and what it costs
- The route from the vehicle to the ballroom or first-floor room, including lifts
- When the room is available for setup, especially if the wedding breakfast is in the same room
Share the answers with your DJ when you book. Our guide to what a DJ needs from your venue lists the rest of the questions.
Smaller weddings upstairs
If you’re using a first-floor room, the setup should be scaled down to match. A compact system and a modest light show suit a room for under 100 people much better than a ballroom rig. Tell the DJ the room name and your numbers.
Indian and fusion weddings
The hotel’s wedding page mentions Indian cuisine from Veer Cuisine and East-meets-West styling. If you’re planning a fusion wedding, look for a DJ who is equally at home with Bollywood, Bhangra and the Western classics, and who can move between them without the floor emptying. Our Asian wedding DJ page explains what to look for.

How matching works
- 1 · Tell us about your event
The occasion, your music, the feel you want and what matters most: lighting, sound, the look of the setup, a DJ who is confident on the microphone.
- 2 · We pick one DJ
We read your answers and choose the local DJ who fits best. Your enquiry goes to that DJ only, never a list.
- 3 · They get in touch
Your DJ contacts you directly with availability and a quote, usually within 24 hours. You deal with them, and you decide whether to book.
